How to Care for Areca Palm? Living Conditions and Tips

Favorite Plant of Recent Times Areca Palm

The most important feature that makes the Areka Palm so popular is that its leaves have a different and decorative structure. The plant, whose homeland is Madagascar, multiplies and grows by giving new shoots from the bottom. The plant, which can be 6 meters tall in open areas, can only grow up to 3 meters in closed environments. In summer, if the conditions are suitable, flowers in the form of bunches bloom like the fruit of date palm trees. As the Areka Palm grows as a structure, its leaves will bend, so a wide area suitable for it should be chosen in the environment where it will be kept. One of the most beautiful and beneficial features is that it moisturizes the environment. Areka Palm cannot withstand temperatures below 0 degrees and does not like air currents and windy areas. When exposed to these conditions, the result will be the death of your plant.

Maintenance Needs of Areka Palm

1- Pot Selection (Depending on Roots)

We do not recommend repotting unless you absolutely have to for your plant. When its roots start to fill its soil and come out of its pot, you can replace it with a one-size-fits-all pot from the pot it is in. As with all plants, you can change the pot in the spring.

2- Soil Selection (Soil should be moist and airy)

As a soil selection, you should choose permeable airy peat soils, which are not very often. The nutrients and vitamins you will add to the soil twice a year will ensure that your flower blooms more beautifully and is healthy. It would be appropriate to add pumice stone in order to keep the soil airy. This ratio can be 3/1. You can choose from soils suitable for ready-made indoor plants.

3- Light Selection (Must be a sunny and bright environment)

One of the features that distinguishes the Areka Palm from other living rooms and flowering plants is that it likes sunny and bright environments. It will be good for your plant, which you bought ready to get used to the sun, in time to avoid sudden leaf burns, because it is grown in greenhouses differently from its natural environment.

4- Irrigation (The soil should be watered without losing its moisture)

One of the features of the plant that requires care is that it should be treated more sensitively in the irrigation process compared to other plants. When you check the upper part of the soil with your finger, it should not be excessively dry and have not lost its moisture. While irrigating, you should do the irrigation process in a way that does not make the soil muddy. In very hot weather, it will need more water.

5- How to Propagate Areca Palm (root separation method)

It is possible to propagate Areka Palm plant, which fills its pot in spring April May and gives offspring on the lower edges of the pot, by root separation. Differently from other plants, transfer the root part of the new offspring you have separated into a bag and tie it. Then leave it in a warm place with light for a few days. When you see the roots forming, you can plant them in their new pots.

6- Diseased (root rot is the most common)

The most common disease problem is root rot. The reason is excessive watering, wrong airless, tight soil selection and airless environment. One of the most common problems experienced is the drying of the leaf tips. The causes of drying on the tips of the leaves are excessive watering or, on the contrary, being too dehydrated. You should be careful with aphids and spider mites because if you can't provide the conditions your plant wants, these diseases can infest your plant. You can get rid of aphids or spider mites by using natural or pesticides.
